I'm moving to a new area in a couple weeks and for the 1st time in my 14 years of driving I'm going to have to become a slave to the tiny screen that seems to tell 75% of people where to go these days. Looking for an affordable unit and from what little I've used them I favor Garmin. Any suggestions?

Can't rely on it as its a work phone and rings off the hook. Already kill the battery a couple times a day between phone calls and the apps I use to make my job easier. Need something dedicated unfortunately.

They vary in interfaces, but it's up to you to decide where to go. :)

Smartphone with a good nav app. Navigon stores your maps so you aren't using data. Waze absolutely rocks it for getting around traffic jams. I use Waze almost religiously on my daily commute.
Get a good mount for your phone, a power supply so you can keep it plugged in, and a bluetooth headset so you can still take those important calls. Money better spent than on a dedicated GPS device.
edit - here's the power supply we use. 2 2.1A ports will keep everything charged nicely. http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=1…

I'd say get a cheapshit Android tablet/second hand phone, install the free Sygic navigation app and feed it some sweet, sweet Garmin maps. Job done, plus you can haul around some music, movies, documents and use wifi.
I did something similar and it worked a treat.
Garmin maps you can buy or torren...er, acquire elsewhere.
As for tablets, you can get them from 45$ with free shipping . Import tax dependent on your location, I suppose.
Maybe a 7": http://www.dx.com/p/levy-dal-7-c…
Spring for a few bucks more and you can get dual core for 59$: http://www.dx.com/p/rk3026-7-dua…
Of course, don't forget to get a car charger. :)

Fuck that, Kinja. This IS not working anymore with Windows Phone: Kinja must die! ...as to Your question, Garmin is the best cboice: a phone can do the navigator in emergencies, but its job is to do the phone... a good navigator is still unbeatable and for many reasons: precise maps, traffic info, memory of trips and parking places, ability of finding almost all addresses and so on... and while it's working the phone can do its basic job of being a fucking phone. Just try to buy one with "for life" maps, like mine... I only paid it €140. And I had to type this in HTML, fuck Kinja...

Car charger? When I use my work phone or personal phone as a GPS I just plug it in as it runs GPS. I also much prefer the Nokia Here (For Windows phones, in my case HTC).

I slightly prefer TomTom, the maps are easier to update (Although not significantly) and most importantly I feel like the turn by turn is timed better with the images on the screen.
Whatever you do though, make sure you get free maps for life!
